Native Japanese audio is everywhere, but at intermediate level a lot of it is still noise. Bilingual Mix takes a Japanese recording and the English version of the same content, lines up every sentence, and exports one MP3: English line → the same line in real native Japanese (or Japanese first, if you prefer). You know what each line means before you hear it, so long audio becomes listening you can actually follow — on a walk, commute or while cooking.
Hear it first
Japanese sample: coming soon. The Japanese output works the same way as the Mandarin–English format.
How it works
- Pick content that exists in both languages. The two MP3s must contain the same content in the same order; different speaking speed is fine.
- Upload both and choose Japanese + English. Each file is transcribed with timestamps, and sentences are matched across languages by meaning and position in the timeline.
- Choose the order and pauses. English first (meaning → Japanese) or Japanese first (test yourself → check). Add a pause after each line if you want to shadow.
- Download one MP3. Play it in any audio player, plus a CSV of the sentence pairs if you want to review them.
Good source material
- Japanese audiobooks with an English edition — novels and non-fiction where you own both audiobooks. See the audiobook guide.
- Anime and films with an English dub — audio extracted from copies you own (e.g. a Blu-ray with both tracks). Dubs often rewrite lines, so read the anime dub guide first.
- Easy-news-style and graded material — short, clearly read texts. If you only have the Japanese text and its English translation (no matching English audio), try the text mode in Studio (members), which voices both with AI.
- Podcasts and courses with translations — lessons or episodes published in both languages, used within the publisher's terms.
Who it's for
- Immersion / comprehensible-input learners (Refold-style or similar) who want more understandable listening hours from material they already like.
- Shadowers — sentence-sized chunks with optional gaps are the natural unit for shadowing. See the shadowing guide.
- Re-listeners — people who go through the same story several times, first with English support, later with Japanese only.
Honest limits
- Dropped subjects and short replies. Japanese often omits subjects and uses very short utterances (はい, そう…). Short lines carry little meaning to match on, so they are more likely to be merged with a neighbour or skipped.
- Loose dub translations. English dubs are written for lip-sync and tone, not word-for-word accuracy. Lines get split, merged or rewritten, which lowers the match quality score. Audiobook translations usually align better.
- Music and overlapping speech. Songs, background music and people talking over each other transcribe poorly and may be skipped.
- It's automatic. Each result shows a match quality score; check a few pairs, and report misaligned ones from the result page.
Use audio you own or have the right to use. Bilingual Mix processes files you upload for your own study; it does not supply audio. Don't upload or share copies you aren't entitled to, and don't redistribute the tracks you make.
FAQ
Does it work with Japanese and English?
Yes. Choose Japanese and English in the language selector. Any pair of the 10 supported languages (Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian) works.
Do I need the same content in both languages?
Yes. This tool pairs an existing Japanese recording with its English counterpart. The content and order should match; timing and pace don't have to. If you only have text, Studio (members) can voice it with AI.
Can I hear Japanese first, then English?
Yes. In the track settings choose which language plays first and add pauses if you want time to shadow.
Which files can I use?
MP3 files up to 50 MB each. The free tier processes up to 10 minutes of audio per run, 2 runs a day.
Do you provide anime or audiobook audio?
No. You upload audio you own or have rights to. We don't store raw audio, and tracks you make are for your own study.
